Exploring New Biometric Dimensions

With e-c-thru technology DERMALOG JENETRIC introduces a new way of capturing biometrics that overcomes the barriers of existing technologies. Based on optical TFT-technology, e-c-thru enables not only most compact and lightweight products but also a new level of user friendliness.

How it works

For many years optical fingerprint scanners have used the physical principle of total internal reflection generating high quality fingerprint images. Although very reliable and robust this approach has limitations in terms of size, weight and the objects to be captured, namely fingerprints only.

E-c-thru technology overcomes these limitations by using a transparent optical TFT sensors for capturing biometrics. The transparent TFT sensor consists of light sensitive pixels. A graphical display underneath the sensor is used both for illumination and user guidance.

By fusing the graphical display with the TFT sensor optical components as used in traditional fingerprint scanner become obsolete. Thereby the new e-c-thru technology is not only reducing size and weight of fingerprint scanners significantly but also brings user friendliness to a new level. Now it is possible to show graphical elements, animations or movies on the display underneath the fingers to be captured. Particularly in non-attended situations, typical capture errors can be reduced and thus, lowering the failure-to-enrol rate and finally speed up the capture process.

Forensic image quality

Since there are no additional optical components required, e-c-thru technology allows to capture non-distorted high quality images. The very close distance between the finger and the image sensor greatly enhances the contrast beyond the requirements of the FBI EBTS standard. Thereby even with 500 ppi image resolution third level details of fingerprint images becomes visible.

Due to the image sensor’s large pixels size the Signal-to-Noise ratio and the amount of grey level is significantly increased which allows capturing dry and wet fingers in a proper way.

In future: Capture fingerprints and documents on the same sensor

We are working for using optical TFT sensors for capturing both fingerprints and documents on the same sensor. Both fingerprints and documents will be captured with 500 ppi and therefore making details and security feature visible. These possibilities enable two factor authentication with new product designs and applications. In future, with e-c-thru technology capturing of passports for border control, barcodes for authentication of users, driver licenses for identification, boarding passes for access boarding or loyalty cards for access control, all addition to fingerprints, will be possible.
